About Insect Repellent

If you’re like me, you’ve developed the opinion that it’s time to close Cafe (insert your name here) to hungry insect “customers”. There are lots of ways to repel these critters, and some ways work better than others. If you have chemical sensitivities, some of the more popular “bug sprays” may not work well for you. Admittedly, if your choice of spray puts you in the hospital, you are unlikely to get chomped on by the bug du jour, but that’s not really the purpose behind bug sprays or a good use of your time.

Good quality essential oils (not diluted, not synthetic, and not extracted with formaldehyde) and pure water may fill the repellent bill – that is if you aren’t sensitive to them too. A few drops of lemon oil and a few drops of eucalyptus oil in an 8 ounce water filled spray bottle will repel most chompers for a few hours at a time without turning you into a chemical storage facility. Shake well before using. The bottle, not yourself. Obviously, don’t use the oils if you are allergic to them and don’t just use the pure oils on your skin without the spray bottle with water. Just because certain full strength oils on your skin may not hurt you doesn’t mean you want to chance looking like an old leather suitcase in a few years. Tiny essential oil droplets in water are unlikely to do nasty things to you. Oh, and a few other things: this stuff is for your skin. Keep it away from your eyes and your food. You can ingest some essential oils without harm, but this stuff isn’t food. So don’t. Check with your vet before you use it on animals.
